Recognising the evolution of tradition, Simon Skinner explores predefined symbols and unveils hidden narratives embedded within. Through this notion, Skinner seeks to deconstruct late perspectives, placing traditional objects within new contexts.
Simon Skinner was born (1991) in Stockholm, Sweden, where he continues to reside and work. He is educated at Konstfack University (2019). His previous work has been purchased by the Swedish Nationalmuseum (2020).
Simon Skinner (b. 1991, Stockholm) is an artist and designer working across sculpture, installation, and object-making. He studied at Konstfack University of Arts, graduating in 2018.
His practice examines how tradition evolves through everyday objects and cultural symbols, treating form as a site where hidden narratives are continuously rewritten. Recent work focuses on Buké, an ongoing series of lighting compositions assembled from reclaimed glassware sourced through flea markets and second-hand shops. Drawing on fragments of Swedish craft and domestic history, the works transform familiar objects into new constellations of light and form. Works from the series have entered the collections of Röhsska Museum, Gothenburg, and the Denver Art Museum.
Earlier work includes Syntax Combs, which reinterprets the historic Afro comb as both utilitarian object and cultural artifact. Included in the permanent collection of the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, the series explores questions of identity, ritual, and adornment through the reimagining of a familiar form.
