Recognising the evolution of tradition, Simon Skinner explores predefined symbols and unveils hidden narratives embedded within. Through this notion, Skinner seeks to deconstruct late perspectives, placing traditional objects within new contexts.
Simon Skinner was born (1991) in Stockholm, Sweden, where he continues to reside and work. He is educated at Konstfack University (2019). His previous work has been purchased by the Swedish Nationalmuseum (2020).
Simon Skinner (b. 1991, Stockholm) is an artist and designer, working across sculpture, design, and installation. A graduate of Konstfack University of Arts (2018), Skinner examines the evolution of tradition through an examination and interplay with cultural symbols and everyday objects, treating his work as an ongoing inquiry into the hidden narratives embedded within everyday form.
His series Syntax Combs, which reinterprets the historic Afro comb as both utilitarian object and cultural artifact, has been featured in institutions and private collections, including the permanent collection of Nationalmuseum, Stockholm. The series has also been profiled by WePresent, highlighting his engagement with identity, ritual, and adornment through a contemporary lens.
Recent press has highlighted Skinner’s inventive material language. In Dezeen, his Buké lamps, sculptural compositions of reclaimed glassware, were recognized for their interplay of found fragments. His work has also been presented during Matter and Shape Paris, Milan and Stockholm Design weeks, and featured in leading European galleries, including Fotografiska.
Skinner’s work invites viewers to see the familiar in unfamiliar ways, suggesting that history is not fixed, but something we continuously reshape and engage with.
